Junkfood Science Exclusive: The big one — results of the biggest clinical trial of healthy eating ever
Junkfood Science: Junkfood Science Exclusive: The big one — results of the biggest clinical trial of healthy eating ever ... and the results are not what everyone expected.
I recently learned that the USDA low fat mantra hammered into us in 1980s is now under serious question. In our pursuit of eating low fat, we increased our consumption of carbohydrates. Rather than focus on fat or calories we apparently need to focus on managing our carbohydrate intake. It seems to work and the biological basis makes sense - I've lost 15 pounds since early summer.
Some researchers are calling this national focus on low fat eating possibly the largest public health disaster in history. As you can see in the linked article and elsewhere, dietary recommendations often lacked supporting evidence. And the media, which typically parrot the latest health studies, have largely ignored this new and very large study (costing nearly 1/2 billion $s) because it goes against the conventional wisdom or what the NY Times labels as the "consensus".
Update: Part 2 of the Junkfood Science exclusive report. Low fat diets did not reduce the incidence of cancer either. And as noted near the end of the report, the few media reports on this huge study made false claims about the study results because the reporters were nincompoops unable to understand simple math concepts.
