In performance the tempo fixes the absolute length of the dit; at moderate tempos the pattern stays within the range where a trained ear can still separate characters, while faster tempos compress the spaces until only the overall rhythm survives. When the music adds reverb, filtering, or competing layers, the result resembles the effect of selective fading or adjacent-channel interference on an HF path.
Points of disagreement
Participants differ on whether an embedded sequence must obey standard Morse spacing if it is to count as code at all. Some maintain that any stretching of intervals for musical phrasing breaks the signalling contract and turns the pattern into abstract rhythm. Others accept deliberate timing shifts provided the underlying letter sequence remains recoverable when the track is slowed or isolated. A second disagreement concerns intent: whether the message should be legible to operators who copy it in real time, or whether the code functions only as source material whose meaning can stay hidden from most listeners. Accuracy of the encoded text also divides opinion; transcriptions of proper names or callsigns sometimes contain substitutions that would be errors on the air but pass unnoticed in a mix.
Practical listening difficulties
- At concert or recorded tempos the dit-dah distinction can blur against drums or sustained chords, requiring repeated playback or isolation of the relevant track.
- Messages that cross bar lines or coincide with dynamic swells are harder to group into characters than steady, unaccompanied passages.
- Distortion or heavy processing can shorten perceived dahs or fill intended spaces, producing the same decoding mistakes that occur under poor band conditions.
